Church Sign Rant: “Take God to work with you this week”

(this is the first of, what I hope to be a series dedicated to pointing out the terrible theology in church signs across America)

Take God to work with you this week”

Ya that’s what I read on a church sign as I was driving this morning.

I’m very frequently both amazed and disturbed by the incredibly terrible theology behind church signs. My hope with this series is to be able to use the terrible, watered down, marketable, “corporatized” american christianity to point the way to good, encouraging and, hopefully, Christ exalting thoughts!

“Take God to work with you this week”

I’ve got to say stuff like this just makes me sick to my stomach. I mean, even the basic premise is absolutely horrifying to think about. That we could “take” God somewhere should be a thought that would make us terrified. I mean, what kind of god is God if He can be snatched up and taken to work with you? It’s no different than saying “take your lunch to work with you this week” and, as a matter of fact, I’ve seen plenty of people who are trying to promote “living on a budget” advocate that exact statement.

Maybe that’s the message of the sign… “make sure that you’ve got God in your spiritual budget this week.”

Well, maybe that’s the message of the sign, but that’s certainly not the message of scripture… “what saith the text?”

Deuteronomy 31:8 The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

Deuteronomy 31:6 Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD your God, he it is that does go with you; he will not fail you, nor forsake you.

Hebrews 13:5 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

Matthew 28:20b And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

It would seem to me that the Bible is pretty clear that God is ALWAYS with us.
But isn’t that better?
Do you really want to live in world where, if you want to have God with you, then YOU are responsible for making sure that happens?
No, it’s much better to know that God is with us, no matter what.

God is with you, if you are in Christ, then He is with you, through everything. God is not meant to be had “on a budget”. He wants to be with you always…He is with you always.

See, christians don’t need to be reminded to “take God with them” (most importantly because that would be impossible for us to do on our own), but instead we need to be reminded that God is already with us.
That’s what we forget, we forget that God is with us, right now…always…forever…He’ll never leave us…He’ll never forsake us.
That’s why God told Joshua “be strong and courageous!” Because Joshua needed to be reminded that, even in the face of his enemies, God is with him.
God is with you too…
Whenever you face trials and temptations, whether you’re at work or not, God is there.
Be reminded of that today, and when you remember, then be strong and courageous…because…

1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

So…maybe we should read the sign this way:

“Remember that God is with you at work (and everywhere else) this week”

That would be a good church sign…
